Microsoft Power BI Setup Guide Lite
Follow our setup guide to connect Microsoft Power BI to Fivetran.
Prerequisites
To connect Microsoft Power BI to Fivetran, you need an Azure Active Directory account with the following:
- Tenant in Microsoft entra ID
- Power BI pro account
- Fabric administrator or authenticate using a service principal.
Setup instructions
Register application and add permissions
Log in to your Azure portal.
Select App registrations.
Click New registration.
Enter a Name for your application.
Select Supported account types.
Click Register and make a note of the Application (client) ID and Directory (tenant) ID. You will need them to configure Fivetran.
On the app navigation menu, under Manage section, click API Permissions.
Click Add a permission and select Power BI Service.
In the What type of permission does your application require? section, click Deledated permissions and select the following scopes:
App.Read.All
Capacity.Read.All
Connection.Read.All
Dashboard.Read.All
DataPipeline.Read.All
Dataset.Read.All
Dataflow.Read.All
Environment.Read.All
Gateway.Read.All
PaginatedReport.Read.All
Pipeline.Read.All
Report.Read.All
Warehouse.Read.All
Workspace.Read.All
Click Add permissions.
Create client secret
Select the application you registered in the Azure portal.
On the left navigation menu, under the Manage section, click Certificates & secrets.
Navigate to Client secrets and click + New client secret.
In the Description, enter a name for the client secret.
In the Expires drop-down menu, select an expiry period for the client secret.
Click Add.
Make a note of the client secret. You will need it to configure Fivetran.
Create security group and add member
Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center with at least Groups Administrator permissions.
Navigate to Identity > Groups > All groups.
Click New group.
Set Group type to
Security
.Enter a Group name.
Click Create to create the group.
Open the newly created group.
Go to the Members tab and click + Add members.
In the search bar, enter the Application (Client) ID you registered.
Select the checkbox for the application and click Select.
Enable Fabric Admin settings
Sign in to the Fabric admin portal.
Navigate to Settings > Admin portal.
Under Admin API settings, select Service principals can access read-only admin APIs.
Set the toggle to Enabled.
Select the Specific security groups radio button and in the text field that appears below it, add the security group you created.
Select Apply.
Finish Fivetran configuration
- In the connection setup form, enter the Destination schema name of your choice.
- Enter the Tenant ID and Client ID you registered.
- Enter the Client secret you created.
- (Hybrid Deployment only) If your destination is configured for Hybrid Deployment, the Hybrid Deployment Agent associated with your destination is pre-selected in the Select an existing agent drop-down menu. To use a different agent, select the agent of your choice, and then select the same agent for your destination.
- Click Save & Test. Fivetran will take it from here and sync your Microsoft Power BI data.
