Error: Current Combination of Data Breakdown Columns Is Invalid

Issue

When setting up a Facebook Ads custom report, the following error appears:

Current combination of data breakdown columns is invalid

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

1. Review the Fivetran documentation on supported breakdown combinations to confirm that your selected breakdowns are compatible.
2. Review the Facebook documentation on breakdown limitations to understand which combinations the API supports.
3. (Optional) Validate your breakdown configuration using the Facebook Graph API Explorer.
4. In Fivetran, go to your Facebook Ads connection page.
5. Select the Settings tab.
6. Click Edit connection.
7. Find the custom report, then click Edit.
8. Click Next.
9. In the Breakdowns drop-down menu, update the selected breakdowns so that the combination is supported by both Fivetran and Facebook.
10. Click Save & Test.

Cause

This issue occurs when the selected fields and breakdowns result in an unsupported breakdown combination. In some cases, the Facebook API automatically includes additional breakdowns, such as action_type, even when they are not explicitly selected in Fivetran. These implicit breakdowns can make the final combination invalid, causing the API to reject the request.
